History.
Kaalmo was born out of a passion for humanitarian journalism, spearheaded by award-winning journalist Idle Adan Mohamed. Inspired by his experiences on the front lines of reporting, Idle wanted to create more than just stories - he wanted to make a real, tangible difference in the lives of those he encountered through his lens. In 2018, Idle and a group of like-minded Somali nationals and diaspora members turned their concern for their homeland's challenges into action, establishing Kaalmo. In its early days, Kaalmo was a vehicle for impactful storytelling, using the power of the camera and the written word to shed light on the struggles and triumphs of communities in Somalia. Idle’s journalistic integrity and compelling storytelling allowed Kaalmo to gain significant attention, leading to the mobilization of resources for education and basic healthcare services.
In 2020, Kaalmo launched the Sustainable Livelihood Program, an ambitious initiative aimed at creating income-generating opportunities for families and reducing dependency on aid. Despite numerous challenges, the initiative was a resounding success, marking a significant milestone in Kaalmo's journey. Over the years, Kaalmo has grown to encompass a broad range of programs, from education to healthcare, water and sanitation, disaster response, and the empowerment of youth and women. Each initiative is underpinned by the principles of storytelling and grassroots engagement that Idle first instilled in the organization. Today, Kaalmo is recognized both locally and internationally for its unwavering commitment to humanitarian journalism and sustainable development in Somalia. As we look toward the future, we continue to embody Idle's vision, striving to tell stories that inspire action and help create a prosperous, resilient Somalia for all its citizens.
